I’ve been in Australia

for thirteen years.

Exactly as long

as I lived

in Zagreb.

Eighteen years

in Split

before that.

When I left Zagreb,

those thirteen years

were my entire

adult life.

Now I’ve lived

another thirteen

here.

I’ve changed my mind

about things.

About myself, too.

I wonder

what the thirty-one-year-old

arriving in Australia

would make of me.

What he’d recognise.

What I’d have

to explain.

I think

we’d have a lot

to talk about.
